Fernandina Memorial Day 2011

Fernandina has quite a bit going on this memorial day. Events include a symphony performing American Patriotic Music, and a 50’s style sock hop. We are posting the following list of events so our campers can plan their memorial day fun while they are in the area.

LET FREEDOM RING: Jacksonville Symphony will perform on Amelia Island Thursday, May 27, 2010 at 8:00 pm at First Baptist Church. American Patriotic music of the greats, with tickets priced at $15. Music by John Williams, Gershwin and Copland, an Armed Forces Salute and Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture. Tickets are being sold at Front & Center, The Book Loft, Amelia Island Visitors Bureau, The Ocean Clubhouse at Amelia Island Plantation, The Golf Club of Amelia, and Fernandina Beach Municipal Golf Course. DANCE AT THE SOCK HOP:Remember those “Happy Days”? Attend a 50s & 60s “Sock Hop” to kick off Memorial Day weekend in Fernandina Beach on Friday evening, May 28, 2010. This is a themed “Sounds on Centre” FREE concert featuring a “twist” contest. Dress in garb of the era for costume contest, too. Classic muscle cars also to be displayed. So head downtown to the historic district from 6-8 pm on Centre Street by the Amelia riverfront. Live music will be performed by “Vic & the Screaming Deacons.” There’ll be dancing in the street!

WORLD WAR II EVENT: Fort Clinch State Park, Amelia Island will present a special World War II Memorial Day Weekend program in honor of the men and women who served during this epic period in history.

At Fort Clinch State Park in Fernandina Beach, Florida, visitors can explore military displays, view memorabilia, and learn about the uniforms, weapons, vehicles, and lifestyle of those who were part of World War II during the 1940’s. The event is Saturday May 29, 2010 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, May 30 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. For more info call Fort Clinch State Park (904) 277-7274.

FERNANDINA FARMER’S MARKET:Saturday, May 29, 2010 9 am until 1 pm. Visit downtown Fernandina on Saturday for fresh, seasonal veggies including radishes, lettuces, yellow squash, onions,

and loads of strawberries. According to the latest Farmers Market news, Reflections of Nature will be at the Market this Saturday with their herb plants, edible plants and native perennials.

It’s a great time to buy seasonal herbs so also check out Cabbage Creek, Ms. Christine’s, and Conner’s A-Maize-Ing Acres for fresh-from-the-farm oregano, mint, basil, rosemary, garlic chives, tarragon, parsley, dill, cutting celery and more. If you like beans, you‘ll want to visit Anna of Boatright Farm for fresh colored butter beans, green butter beans, zipper peas, and black eyed peas with snaps. (The Fernandina Farmer’s Market is an ongoing activity, open every Saturday 9 am-1 pm at Centre Street and North 7th Street in the historic district.)

OPEN WATER CHALLENGE: Are you a swimmer? Even if you’re not, you may like to watch some great athletes at the beach this weekend. Fernandina Beach is once again hosting the ”Amelia Island Ed Gaw Open Water Challenge.” This year’s event is during Memorial Day weekend, on Saturday, May 29, 2010 with race day check in and deck registration at Main Beach Park, 7 am (Main Beach is also the race finish area). Race starts at 8:30 am. The two events are a 5K open water challenge that starts at Simmons Road beach access, and a 1-mile open water swim that starts from the Jasmine Beach access in Fernandina Beach. Both events open to USMS and USA-Swimming registrants.
